Gujranwala: In a major step
toward modernizing the city’s infrastructure, Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N)
President Nawaz Sharif on Thursday officially approved the Gujranwala Mass
Transit Project, a long-awaited initiative aimed at transforming public
transport and improving daily commuting for residents.
The decision was announced
during a high-level meeting held in Gujranwala, attended by Punjab Chief
Minister Maryam Nawaz, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and other senior
government officials. The leadership reaffirmed the Punjab government’s
commitment to uplifting the city’s transport network and supporting sustainable
urban development.
Speaking at the event, Nawaz
Sharif emphasized the importance of this mega project for the people of
Gujranwala, stating, “This project will make life easier for the common man and
improve urban mobility across the city.”
According to Provincial
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, the Gujranwala Mass Transit System is designed
to run along a 30+ kilometre route from Eminabad to Ghakkhar, offering a modern
and eco-friendly commuting solution.
Key highlights include:
·
40 electric
articulated buses to operate on the route
·
Capacity to serve over
51,000 passengers daily
·
Reduced travel
time across major commercial and residential zones
·
Lower
environmental impact due to electric mobility
·
Improved
accessibility for workers, students, and daily commuters
This transit system is
expected to bring Gujranwala closer to major cities like Lahore and Faisalabad,
where similar modern transport systems are already under development or
testing.
Officials noted that the
project marks a significant milestone in upgrading Gujranwala’s urban
infrastructure. Improved transport facilities are also likely to positively
influence the Gujranwala real estate market, particularly areas located along
the transit route, where property demand and value may see an upward trend.
While the government has yet
to disclose construction timelines or funding details, authorities emphasized
their commitment to enhancing public services, sustainable mobility, and
citywide connectivity.
The approval of this project
positions Gujranwala for future growth and development, aligning it with the
vision of a modern, well-connected urban centre in Punjab.
